About Gordons Construction Equipment

Gordons Construction Equipment (James Gordon Ltd) is one of the largest dealers of Develon machinery in the UK, an achievement which has been created over many years. In 1865, James Gordon founded the company in the busy market town of Castle Douglas, in south-west Scotland. James began manufacturing turnip sowers and would eventually expand his range of machines to 74 different items, including ploughs, pulpers, cheese presses and even cow ties.

By 1922, the business continued to flourish but it was time for James to retire, which gave Messrs James and William Montgomerie the opportunity to acquire the business, which is still owned by the Montgomerie family today.  Develon (Doosan at the time) approached Gordons in 2017 to take on the franchise in Dumfries and Galloway, Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.

Highly regarded for its reliability and quality, Develon’s range of construction machinery ensures that you are not only investing in one of the finest, specialist machines available, you are also buying into world-class customer service and product support.

Once this deal was agreed, Gordons then recruited a separate construction sales, service and parts team, employing staff with previous Develon experience, employing two dedicated area sales representatives, three parts personnel and eight service engineers, with fully-equipped service vehicles, controlled from HQ at the Castle Douglas depot. After 18 successful months, Develon asked Gordons to expand the company territory to central belt Scotland, Ayrshire and Argyll.

Now employing more than 100 members of staff overall, Gordons offers a specialist, dedicated sales team, as well as factory-trained service and support staff, providing and maintaining the entire Develon range. As an independent Develon dealer, Gordons covers Dumfries and Galloway, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Renfrewshire, with six depots based at Carlisle, Castle Douglas, Dumfries, Whauphill, Strathaven and Moscow. At more than 160-years-old, Gordons is still growing and expanding into the future, ensuring that your business will receive the best support possible.
